The epiglottis is a flap of tissue that covers the trachea when we swallow, ensuring that food and liquids enter the esophagus and not the trachea. This prevents choking and ensures that the airway remains clear for breathing. Additionally, the muscles in the throat and esophagus work together to coordinate the swallowing process, allowing food to pass through the esophagus and into the stomach while the trachea remains open for air to pass through. This coordinated effort between the epiglottis and the muscles of the throat and esophagus helps to ensure that air and food enter the correct pathways. **
